The Museo archeologico of Cagliari, is presenting a conference by Patricia Olivo, MIBAC’s Sardinian regional secretary, titled The signs of devotion of Saint Efisio on May 1st. This event is part of the initiatives associated with the exhibition Efisio. Martyrized by the Romans, sanctified by the Christians, cherished by the contemporaries, and will take place on Thursday 6 September, 2018, at 17.30.
The meeting will be an opportunity to see the simulacrum of Saint Efisio through different eyes, and to learn about the important restoration completed in 2009.
The statue, carried during the yearly procession, has undergone various maintenance interventions by the Fraternity, who altered the modeling and the polychrome while trying to preserve it. The signs of devotion are etched in the statue by the repeated remakes, stuccos, and complete part removal, like the belt jewel settings, which were eliminated to facilitate the dressing of the Saint during the festivities.
Since the restoration in 2009, visitors can admire the great refinement in the color utilization, and technique executions. After an accurate investigation of the artwork, it was associated to the style of an eighteenth century Neapolitan school, which existed throughout the seventeenth century, gifting Sardinia with many products with increasingly naturalistic forms, and more refined hues.
