From 1882 until the present day, a journey in memory of the Risorgimento open until 13 September 2019, the Museo nazionale Memoriale Giuseppe Garibaldi  of Caprera, will have a special opening with an exhibition titled The Royal honors to Garibaldi on Wednesday 31 July, 2019, from 15.30 to 19.30.

For this occasion, the wreath donated by King Umberto I in 1889 will be displayed in the first hall of the museum’s fourth block . The King, who was the first person to honor the General’s memory, accompanied by Prince Vittorio Emanuele, laid a flower wreath later replaced by a bronze one, with the following inscription: “To Giuseppe Garibaldi with fond memory, Umberto I – Caprera, 17 August, 1889”.

1889. King Umberto I visiting the tomb of Garibaldi

This relic is usually kept in the storage deposits of the Compendio Garibaldino, and just for this occasion it will displayed for the visitors viewing.  After Garibaldi’s death, thousands of devoted people gathered  in front of his grave:  veterans of homeland battles, patriotic associations, student delegations, literary men, but the most illustrious visits were the ones from the Royal House of Savoy.  It was customary to lay flower wreaths next to the grave, later replaced by bronze ones. There are currently about one hundred pieces of this original collection, perfectly preserved, that will be periodically exhibited.
