Giuseppe Garibaldi Memorial

Caprera - La Maddalena

Built on a Savoy Fortress dating to the end of the 19th c., the Memorial is a museum entirely devoted to the Hero of the Two Worlds. Visitors follow a historical-documentary path over an area of more than 800 square meters to discover the figure of Garibaldi. It is part, along with the Compendio Garibaldino, of the Museum System of Caprera. Equipped with multimedia systems allowing interactive tours, the Museum offers fascinating visits, also due to the unparalleled beauty of the surrounding landscape.

The History

The museum was inaugurated in 2012 by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, paralleling the celebrations of Italy’s unification, under the project “€Luoghi della Memoria” which aims to recover important historical Italian sites.
The Arbuticci Fortress, rampart of the Navy until the Second World War, today hosts the Giuseppe Garibaldi Memorial. Significant interventions have enhanced the site and made it available again for the community, thus bearing tangible testimony to collective historical memory.

The Building

The Fortress has undergone renovation works in order to create a space dedicated to the life of Giuseppe Garibaldi, one of the most representative figures of the Italian Risorgimento.
Improvements to the building, located on the island where Garibaldi spent the last 26 years of his life in search of peace, have not altered its original structure and allow for a constant connection between tradition and modernity.

The Collection

The Memorial is located within the restored Forte Arbatucci and tells about Garibaldi’s early year, the political and military enterprises and his adulthood. His complex figure is recreated through illustrated artworks, audio/video effects, and thanks to the rich collection donated by senator Mario Birardi and other public donations.

The exhibition panels

The Memorial traces the whole life of Garibaldi, from his youth as a sailor fascinated by the ideas of Mazzini to the his later years spent in Caprera.

Books and Documents

The museum collections include roughly 200 items ranging from artworks to documents arranged in accordance with a historical-documentary layout which portrays the figure of Garibaldi, the Compendium and the Museum System of Caprera. The Memorial traces the whole life of Garibaldi, from his youth as a sailor fascinated by the ideas of Mazzini to the his later years spent in Caprera.

Multimedia spaces

Through restoration works completed in 2012 the Memorial has been endowed with multimedia equipment including projection systems and multimedia installations which make the museum contents more accessible and engaging for visitors.
